Gripe tape cut outs are a great way to customize your longboard in an artistic and unique way. It takes some time and some artistic creativity but if done properly it can really accentuate your board and look really cool!

What You‘ll Need




  • Hair Dryer
  • Gripe Tape
  • X-ACTO Knife
  • X-ACTO Knife
  • Ruler
  • Sharpie Marker
  • File
  • Cutting Board

Removing The Gripe Tape

The first thing you’ll need to do is remove the old grip tape from your longboard. To do this you’ll need to take off your trucks with a skate tool. After removing your trucks get a hair dryer and blow hot air around the edges of your board where the gripe tape meets the ends of your longboard. Continue to go around your board with the blow dryer for around a minute. After start to take off the gripe tape while continuing to blow the hair dyer on the spot your peeling off. Continue to pull the gripe tape off till its all off the longboard. If there is small amounts of gripe tape left on the board use the gripe tape you’ve taken off to sand it off the longboard.

Designing the Gripe Tap cut out

You’ll need to have some fresh new gripe tape, if you don’t have any check out Amazon they always have great deals on gripe tape. Now take your new grip tape, find where you want to make your design and make a mark with the ruler in the center of the backside of your gripe tape. Now take your sharpie marker and draw the design on the backside. After you’ve finshed drawing your design put the gripe tape on the cutting board and use the X-ACTO Knife to cut the design out.

Carefully put the gripe tape on your longboard. After completing this successfully, use the file and drag it around the edges of the board to mark it. Then take your X-ACTO Knife and cut off the excess gripe tape. If you get any air bubbles while applying the gripe tape to your longboard just poke a hole in the middle of the bubble to release the trapped air.
